Sta. Lucia Land Inc. awarded as Top 10 Developer in 2012 by BCI Asia
The other eight winning firms, in alphabetical order, are DMCI Homes, Inc., Eton Properties Philippines, Inc., Federal Land Inc., Filinvest Land, Inc., Megaworld Corporation, Robinsons Land Corporation, SM Development Corporation, and Sta. Lucia Land, Inc.
Meanwhile, this year’s top 10 Philippine architecture firms are ASYA Design, Casas + Architects, Edward Co Tan + Architects, H1 Architecture, Jose Siao Ling & Associates, Palafox Associates, Pimentel Rodriguez Simbulan & Partners, R. Villarosa Architects Partners & Associates, Visionary Architecture Inc., and WV Coscolluela & Associates.
“Basically, the top 10 architects and developers are identified as those with the highest value portfolios of projects scheduled to start construction in 2012 … The results are generated based on extensive and impartial research of BCI Asia,” said Apple Patricio, BCI Asia – Philippines cross media division head, at a May 9 press briefing.
BCI, a media group that publishes reports on the building industry, was established in 1998 and covers the Philippines, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. In 2006, the annual BCI Asia Awards were created to laud the region’s top 10 architectural firms; four years later, an award category for property developers was also created.
The Philippine awards will be given out on May 29 at the Shangri-La Hotel Makati.
“We are expecting 150-200 of the industry players, including principals of the leading architects, developers, engineer[ing] and consulting firms, and different organizations in construction,” said Ms. Patricio.
In a separate interview, the BCI officer said that the developers category was formed due to the growing requests of industry players to also recognize the sector. “We’re coming up with a category for engineers as well, so [it will be called] the top 10 contractors,” she said.
Besides the two main awards categories, BCI also bestows the FuturArc Prize and the FuturArc Green Leadership Award, which both aim to promote sustainable building.
The FuturArc Prize was created in 2007 by FuturArc Journal, BCI’s publication unit. The global competition has two categories: one for professionals, and the other for students. Contest participants submit project designs for sites only in Asia or Australia.
Formerly called the BCI Green Design Award, the FuturArc Green Leadership Award was launched by the BCI Group of Companies in 2009. While the FuturArc Prize is for projects, the FuturArc Green Leadership Award honors structures that have actually been completed by architectural firms. The buildings must also only be found in Asia or Australia.
The five categories of this international contest are commercial architecture, institutional architecture, interior architecture, residential architecture – individual houses, and residential architecture – multiple houses.
Ms. Patricio explained that the jury for these two environmental contests are based in Singapore and other parts of Southeast Asia. “When we started [the FuturArc Green Leadership Award] 5 years ago, the submissions from the Philippines were low. After promoting it and now that the industry is going into green building, I think more people will be able to submit [entries],” she said. — Gianna B. Villavicencio
